Danish Puff Pastry Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 box (17.3 ounces) puff pastry: The foundation of our Danish puff pastry, this store-bought puff pastry provides flaky layers that are key to a buttery, crisp crust.
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened to room temperature: The heart of the cream cheese filling, adds a creamy texture and rich flavor that blends perfectly with the flaky puff pastry.
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar: Adds just the right amount of sweetness to the cream cheese filling, enhancing the overall taste of the danish.
  • 1 tablespoon milk or heavy cream: Works to smooth out the cream cheese mixture, ensuring it spreads easily on the puff pastry dough.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: Infuses the filling with a subtle hint of vanilla, offering depth to the danish’s flavor profile.
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips: Introduces a sweet and slightly bitter contrast to the creaminess of the filling – a hit for those of us who are chocolate lovers.
  • 1 egg + 2 tablespoons water (for egg wash): Gives our Danish puff pastries that beautiful, golden brown shine, making them utterly irresistible.
Preparing the dough

Preparing the Puff Pastry Dough

  1. Unfold your store-bought puff pastry sheets on a clean, flat surface. Room temperature dough is crucial here; it makes the puff pastry dough easier to handle and fold without cracking.
  2. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice along the fold lines of each sheet to create six equal squares. This will form the base of your danish pastries, promising a flaky, buttery crust in every bite. Use the second sheet of puff pastry if you want to make 12 danishes.
  3. Gently score a border around each square with your knife, about ½ inch from the edges, to delineate where the cream cheese filling will go. Be careful not to cut all the way through.
  4. Prick the center of each square lightly with a fork. This prevents the center from puffing up too much, ensuring a flat surface for your delicious toppings.
  5. Place the prepared puff pastry squares onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are spread out with enough space between each piece. The parchment paper not only prevents sticking but also makes cleanup a breeze.
  6. Chill the prepared puff pastry dough in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes if it becomes too soft. This little pause allows the butter in the puff pastry to firm up again, which is key to achieving those beautifully flaky layers we all love in a danish puff pastry.
Cream cheese filling

Making the Cream Cheese Filling

Transform simple ingredients into a delightful cream cheese filling for our danish puff pastry. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Start by placing the softened cream cheese in a small bowl.  It must be at room temperature to ensure it mixes into a perfectly smooth consistency.
  2. Add three tablespoons of granulated sugar to the cream cheese.  This adds just the right amount of sweetness.
  3. Introduce a tablespoon of milk or heavy cream, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract.  These ingredients add a hint of richness and depth to the flavor profile. For a different flavor profile, you could add other flavorings like lemon extract or a dash of lemon zest.
  4. Mix everything together until well combined.  The goal is a creamy, homogenous mixture that’s ready to be dolloped onto your puff pastry sheets.
Adding the topping

Assembling and Baking Your Danish Pastries

Once your dough and filling are ready, it’s time to bring this delightful pastry to life. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Add the Cream Cheese Filling: Spoon a small portion of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each dough piece. Keep it within the scored border. Optionally, you can mix in a tsp of vanilla extract or a dash of lemon zest into your filling before adding it for an extra zing.
  2. Top Off with Chocolate Chips: Sprinkle your chosen amount of chocolate chips over the top of the cream cheese. If chocolate isn’t your thing, feel free to top them with fresh berries, bits of fruit, or even a spoonful of your favorite pie filling. Add different toppings to each pastry to customize them for your family or guests.
  3. Apply the Egg Wash: Mix the egg and tablespoons of water together, then brush this mixture along the outside border of your pastry. This will give your Danish that irresistible golden sheen.
  4. Bake to Golden Perfection: Place your assembled pastries on an ungreased baking sheet (you can line it with parchment paper if desired), leaving space between each one for the puff pastry to expand. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 18 minutes or until the edges are beautifully golden brown and flaky.
