Adorable Mermaid Under the Sea Birthday Party Food Ideas

Our daughter chose a Mermaid theme for her 9th birthday party. My mama heart was so excited, and my mind immediately started thinking of decorations and sea party food ideas. I love party planning, and I was going to have so much fun with this party theme!
Since our daughter wanted to invite girls and boys to her birthday party, we tweaked the Mermaid theme a little, and it became a Mermaid Under the Sea theme. I created a Pinterest board for the Mermaid Under the Sea Birthday Party and began gathering even more ideas.

Mermaid Under the Sea Birthday Party
For our Mermaid Under the Sea color scheme we selected shades of aqua, lime green and purple. Choosing the color scheme first helped us keep a cohesive look to all the decor and food, and we love how it turned out.
Our daughter hand delivered her Message In A Bottle party invitations to her friends at school, church, and in the neighborhood.
Mermaid Under the Sea Birthday Party Decorations
On the day of the party, guests were greeted by sea-themed wreaths and a welcome message on my free-standing chalkboard. (I love this chalkboard and use it all the time!)
We placed the gift bags (from the dollar store) on the dresser in the entryway. There they became part of the party decor and were easy to access when guests left the party.
There were Jellyfish Lanterns overhead as guests entered the house.
And more Jellyfish Lanterns in the living room, dining room, and kitchen,
and there were even more out by the pool.

The Sandcastle Cake
The food table was the focal point of our Mermaid Under the Sea Birthday Party. We covered the table with an inexpensive plastic tablecloth (which made clean up a breeze), and a fishing net was placed on top of that.
The Sandcastle Cake was the star of the show. It was covered in graham cracker crumbs and decorated with white chocolate sea shells. I ordered the base of this cake from my local Publix bakery, then made all the decorations myself. I used candy melts to create the white chocolate sea shells with ice cream cones and lollipops for the castle turrets. I’m definitely not a pro at cake decorating, but I think it’s my favorite thing from the party. You can find complete instructions for making the Sandcastle Cake here.
Mermaid Under the Sea Birthday Party Food
I made these White Chocolate Seashells several days in advance and stored them in the refrigerator. On the day of the party the only thing I needed to do was display them on a bed of unrefined sugar-in-the-raw spilling out of a beach pail. I chose sugar-in-the-raw because of its golden brown color, and it doesn’t clump together like brown sugar. It also looks more like beach sand, don’t you think? You could also use graham cracker crumbs.
The kids loved these Goldfish Marshmallow Pops! They are way easier than cake pops because you don’t have to cook anything. We made them the day before the party using candy melts for the blue frosting. You can never have too many make-ahead party foods.
These Oyster Cookies (or clam cookies) were so easy to make! They are simply Madeleine cookies with frosting in the center and a white Sixlet for the “pearl.” If you aren’t able to find these in a grocery store, they are available for purchase on Amazon. If you want to make your own you could purchase a Madeleine baking pan. Or keep it even more simple and substitute sugar cookies or shortbread cookies. The Oyster Cookies were served on a platter sitting on some sugar-in-the-raw to mimic beach sand.
Something Not Sweet
I didn’t want all the party foods to be sugary sweets, so we made some Seaweed Spirals. We spread cream cheese onto spinach wraps and layered lettuce, cheese, and turkey on top. Then we rolled them up, stuck in colorful toothpicks and cut them into small slices. You could also make Seaweed Spirals using tuna salad.
Some of the kids were hesitant to try these until we made it perfectly clear that they really didn’t contain any seaweed. After that clarification, they disappeared quite quickly. These can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator in an air-tight container.
How adorable is this little guy! The Crabwiches may have been my favorite of all the party themed food. We purchased crescent rolls, sliced them the morning of the party, and stacked lettuce, ham, and Swiss cheese inside. The eyes are large black olive slices on toothpicks inserted into the crescent roll. A tray of these sea creatures made an adorable centerpiece!
White cheese cut into triangle shapes made delicious Shark Teeth. This is another party food that can be prepared ahead of time.

More Fun Snacks and Under the Sea Food Ideas
We placed chocolate coins into a small treasure chest box decorated with strands of beads in our party colors. Candies were poured into decorative bowls the morning of the party.
Here are jellybeans, Sixlets, and lollipops. And don’t you think goldfish crackers are the perfect salty snack for an ocean party theme? And of course, you have to serve them in a goldfish bowl (available at Dollar Tree)!
Bugles remind me of seashells and are another great salty snack to include.
I found rock candy lollipops in our party colors and purchased these containers at a party supply store for one dollar each. Dollar Tree also carries acrylic containers in a variety of colors.
Mermaid Party Beverages
Need a cute idea for decorating your drink station?
Use a few drops of blue food coloring to turn lemon-lime soda into Ocean Water, and green punch can be served as Sea Water.
My daughter and I had a great time making some Shell Creatures out of seashells we already had from previous beach vacations. We used shells, hot glue (well, I used the hot glue), googly eyes, and a marker. They were displayed under the drink dispenser on a bed of glass marbles (the kind used for vase fillers).
More Sea Party Ideas
There were so many cute ideas for a sea party theme, that I couldn’t use them all. Here are some additional ideas to incorporate into your Ocean Themed Party.
- Add Swedish Fish or gummy fish to the top of cupcakes with blue frosting or include them in party favor bags.
- A large bowl of gummy worms makes a great addition to the food table.
- Serve crab cakes.
- A large bowl of tortilla chips can also be “sharks’ teeth.”
- Serve sand dollar cookies.
