Preparing Your Cupcakes

Your Thanksgiving turkey cupcakes can be made with either store-bought or homemade cupcakes. Do not feel guilty about reaching for a box mix from the local grocery store! It cuts the prep time significantly, allowing you to channel your energy into the whimsical decoration of your festive cupcakes (or pass this task off to someone else). Save even more time by buying ready-made cupcakes from the bakery. If you order them ahead, you can even ask for them to be unfrosted with a bag of chocolate frosting on the side. (You’re welcome.)

The key, however, is ensuring these little canvases are unfrosted and ready to be adorned. Whether you’re thawing them overnight or cooling freshly baked ones, the goal is to have perfect, unfrosted cupcakes ready for decorating on Thanksgiving Day.

Easy Chocolate Frosting

Remember, you can use pre-made frosting for this project, but if you want that homemade touch, here’s how to whip up a quick batch of chocolate frosting:

Easy Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3-4 tbsp milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  1. Combine softened butter, salt, and about half of the powdered sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix on low speed until combined.
  2. Add in the remaining powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until combined.
  3. Next, add the cocoa powder and mix again.
  4. If the frosting isn’t as smooth as you’d like, add in 2 tablespoons of milk and mix to combine. Increase the speed to medium and mix for an additional two minutes until the frosting is smooth and fluffy looking.  Only use the remaining milk if the mixture still appears dry and crumbly – mix again until smooth.
  5. Transfer about ½ of a cup of frosting to a piping bag without a tip.  Transfer the remaining frosting to a piping bag with a large round tip.

  1. Start with your favorite chocolate cupcakes, either homemade or store-bought, ensuring they are unfrosted and at room temperature.
