Mother of Pearl Kitchen Backsplash

Before and after pics of Mother of Pearl mosaic tile backsplash and black granite countertops. Gorgeous!

This project started innocently when we decided to paint the entire downstairs of our home.

Since the downstairs has an open floor plan, I had to consider how the new paint color would look in every room. The room that was giving me the most trouble was our kitchen. After looking through countless pictures of kitchens with black countertops, my eye wandered from paint color to backsplashes.

Then I saw it. A Mother of Pearl kitchen backsplash! It was so pretty! It would contrast so nicely with the black countertops, it was so shimmery, it was made for me! I hesitantly showed it to my husband who also loved it (I am so thankful for that man), and we decided to start saving up for it. Since the Mother of Pearl mosaic tile was kind of expensive, we decided we would save money by installing it ourselves.

{Check out THIS POST where I share the
step-by-step installation process and LOTS of pictures!}

Before-straight on shot

Here is a “before” shot of the kitchen. The yellow color does nothing except blend with the cabinets. Boring.

Since we had already chosen the paint color, we decided to start by painting each wall where the backsplash would end. It would be easier to paint these areas now instead of cutting in around them after the backsplash was installed.

And now…are you ready?

And here’s another area of the kitchen. I am in love!

Here are some of my favorite before and after shots for comparison.

We are thrilled with the results! I love the sparkle it adds to the room, and the whole kitchen feels more elegant.

Another bonus is that the kitchen still has a neutral color scheme. I currently have some blue accents added, but so many colors will pop against the black and white background.

If you’re considering an update to your kitchen, let me encourage you to consider installing a backsplash. The entire project only took us two days. Next week I’ll tell you how we were able to do it so quickly and easily.

    1. Mare,
      Thank you so much!!!

We purchased the tiles from Home Depot online. Here is a link to the tiles (http://fave.co/2eoUsPN). In this post I have lots of pics and instructions on how we installed the backsplash (https://findingtimetofly.com/how-to-tile-a-backsplash-using-simple-mat/). These tiles cannot be cut with regular scissors. We used tile snippers, but my husband had to do all the cutting. It was too hard for me!

Installing this backsplash was one of our favorite projects. It only took us a weekend and made a huge impact on our kitchen.

Let me know if I can answer anything else for you!
