2015 was a rough year for me. In February my Mom suffered a stroke from which she would not recover. She went to be with Jesus and was reunited with my Dad and sister. Close friends moved away at the beginning of the year leaving a huge friend-sized hole in my life. I lost income and a job I loved dearly. And a Thanksgiving trip we had been looking forward to all year ended up being a disappointment because I got severely sick the entire week. It was a year of emotional and financial struggles that were unexpected and overwhelming.
John and I celebrated our 25th Anniversary in September. We had hoped to take a special trip together, but financially we were tight and once school started it was nearly impossible to find someone to help watch our 5 kids. After our failed Thanksgiving trip, we decided to at least look into the possibility of an end-of-the-year special trip. We were able to find a great last-minute deal on a cruise for the week after Christmas.
We needed this!
(By the way, this was our first cruise, and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I’ll be sharing tips about preparing for your first cruise later.)
The ship pulled back into port on Thursday, December 31, 2015. I checked my phone, and found over 600 emails had accumulated while we were away. Ugh! I was not looking forward to going through them. After a couple of hours in the car on our way home I decided to finally tackle the email.
In one of those emails I found the following Bible verse.
Keep in mind that we had just gotten off of a ship.
It was the last day of the year 2015.
It had been a really lousy year for us.
I read the verses aloud to my husband, John.
It was as if God were speaking directly to us.
This is what the Lord says— he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
~ Isaiah 43:16, 18-19
A word from God…what a great way to start a new year!
This scripture spoke to me so deeply that I decided to make it my 2016 Bible verse of the year. I created an 8×10 printable and put it in a frame to display in our home. I would love to share it with you also.
