You’ve spent the time to pre-plan your meals and make a basic grocery list. So why does the actual grocery shopping take so long? Just when you think you’re almost done you realize you forgot something 3 aisles back. This scenario repeats throughout your shopping trip, and pretty soon you realize you’ve been on every aisle at least twice. You spend a long time in the store, and then when you finally get home you realize you’re missing some essential items for meals you planned to prepare this week. There’s got to be a better way!

How a Detailed Shopping List Will Save You Time

What if your grocery list was organized like a grocery store? If all the produce items and dairy items were together on your list, it would be easy to grab all of them while you’re actually in the produce and dairy sections. This Printable Grocery List will help you organize your list and spend less time backtracking while shopping. All you need to do to create your categorized grocery list is simply write the item under the corresponding category. You’ll get through the store in record time!

Why You Need a Detailed Grocery List

Whether you’re on a food budget, trying to make healthy meals for your family, or just don’t have a lot of time for shopping, a simple grocery list is a great tool to use! Here are several benefits of using a weekly grocery list.

  • Shopping with a simple grocery checklist will ensure you purchase the essential items and reduce impulse purchases.
  • Organizing your grocery list items by category will reduce unnecessary purchases. No more duplicate items like 3 bottles of garlic powder in the spice cabinet.
  • When used in combination with a weekly meal planner, you’ll purchase more healthy food as you plan your family meals.
  • As you get into the routine of shopping on a regular basis, you’ll become familiar with the prices of the items. Your grocery bill will be more predictable, and you’ll spend less money picking up last minute fast food on your way home.

Tips for Using Printable Grocery Shopping Lists

  • Keep a blank shopping list somewhere that’s easily accessible. You could put them on the fridge door or your kitchen counter. If you prefer to hide your list, hang a clipboard inside of a kitchen cabinet. Each time you run out of a grocery item, add it to the list. Tell each family member to do the same. You should also include household items like toilet paper and cleaning products.
  • Until you learn the layout of your grocery store, it may be helpful to jot down the aisle numbers on each section of your shopping list. As you make more regular shopping trips, you’ll become familiar with where items are located in each grocery store aisle.
  • Shop the center grocery store aisles first, and save the perimeter of the store for last. This is a great way to ensure you have plenty of room for items like dairy products and fresh fruit to be placed on top of your shopping cart. It’s the best way to avoid damaging the more fragile and expensive food items.
  • Keep staple food items stocked in your pantry like olive oil, canned tomatoes, and chicken broth. This Pantry Essentials List will help you inventory your pantry. Keeping basic supplies in stock will enable you to plan daily meals and reduce trips to the grocery store.

I’m going to be honest with you. Grocery shopping is one of my least favorite chores. It ranks right up there with doing laundry. However, we all have to do things in life that we don’t love doing. At least with an organized grocery list, I’m able to get in and out of the store quickly and on to things I like to do.

  1. Thank you so much for this grocery list. It’s by far the best of many that I’ve printed from the Internet. The categories are spot-on, and I love the bright colors, too. (My only suggestion, if you ever revise this, would be smaller margins so that the writing spaces could be a little bit bigger. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this extremely helpful template!
