Why is it so hard to slow down?
The challenge of being still and getting quiet is extremely difficult in today’s world. There is such an emphasis on action, doing, getting results, that we continually push ourselves beyond the point of being productive. There is so much noise, activity and overall busyness. Distractions are many. Stress, anxiety and fear are common.
Why do we continue to push ourselves when we know we need rest?
Today’s verse reminds me of the importance of being still, having a quiet time in my day, and having faith in God.
“Be Still and Know That I Am God.”
Do we fear peace and quiet? Being still and quiet can cause us to ponder on things we might be trying to avoid. It’s easier for us to turn on the television, surf the internet, log on to social media, or text a friend than to disconnect and spend time with God. There isn’t anything wrong with these activities, but if we are turning to them instead of connecting with God our lives will show it. We cannot be the wife, mom, friend or expect to become more like Christ if we aren’t spending time listening to Him.
Even Jesus had to retreat from the crowds, be still and have some quiet time with God. If Jesus needed quiet time, how much more do we need it?
Here are a few times recorded in scripture where Jesus went away to a quiet place:
After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
We can pray anytime, anywhere. So what’s the point of going to a lonely, solitary, quiet place to pray? The difference is the quietness. We can cry out to God in the noisiest conditions, and He can hear us just fine. He does not need the quiet. We need the quiet.
In the quiet we can concentrate on Him. Concentrate on his holiness, mercy and grace. The more we understand about God, the more we start to comprehend His greatness, power and strength. He is the Father, the Creator, our hope and refuge, the Shepherd, the Healer, our Provider and so much more! We can have faith in Him. We don’t have to be stressed out or worry. No matter what we are going through, He has got this!
In the quiet we can hear Him. We need to hear from Him. We have decisions to make, relationships to sustain, hurts that need healing and direction to seek. Part of praying is talking to God, thanking Him for His blessings and asking him for help. The other often neglected part of prayer is listening. To truly hear from God, we need to unplug, get to a quiet place, and listen.
So, there it is.
“Be Still and Know That I Am God.”
In only 8 words, God has spoken to some of the most crippling obstacles we will face…busyness, stress, anxiety and fear.
The next time you find yourself feeling anxious, fearful, stressed out or over busy, try to hear Him beckoning to you, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Keeping a few framed Bible verses in our home helps me keep God’s word in my everyday life. It is also a great tool to help memorize scripture. Each time I walk by the print I try to read the whole verse, either to myself or sometimes I even read it out loud. Our kids also notice when I change the framed Bible verses and usually comment on them which creates an opportunity to talk about scripture. I ask them what the verse means to them and then share why I chose it.
God’s word is alive!
