Dining Room Makeover On A Budget

Dining room in light blues and medium wood tones done on a budget. Great tips for saving money!

When we moved into our home in the spring of 2014 I already had a mental list of updates I wanted to make. Topping my list was our dining room. Even though the previous owner had done a great job decorating, the colors were not my favorite and it was a little outdated. She had chosen warm red and gold colors, and I envisioned cooler feeling coastal hues of grays and blues. My goal was to get the dining room done before Thanksgiving.

Before making any purchases, I started by creating a Dining Room board on Pinterest. I pinned lots of rooms I loved. This visual reference helped me get an overall plan for my room.

I made purchases for this room slowly over several months waiting for my selections to go on sale.

I had my heart set on a sparkly chandelier for the dining room, but my taste was a little more expensive than our budget. After much searching I was able to find this chandelier at Home Depot. Are you ready for this? It was only $100! All the “crystals” are plastic on this chandelier which greatly reduced the cost. Shhhh…you can’t even tell unless you touch them, and who is going to be touching your chandelier?

Here’s another before/after shot of the wall above the buffet. The floral prints are from Kirkland’s. I used a coupon to purchase them while they were on sale. (Combining sales and coupons is one of my favorite ways to save and works on all kinds of purchases!) I love how they look in this room!

The window treatments were another bargain. I purchased these window panels from Pottery Barn and only paid $20 per panel! I shopped online during one of their window treatment sales. These window panels were already discounted in the clearance section, but were discounted even more because of the window treatment sale. Score!

The dining room chairs are from Kirkland’s. Of course they were on sale when I purchased them. I also had a coupon and a birthday bonus discount at the time of purchase. We ended up getting 8 chairs for under $60 each.

After months of patiently accumulating my decor pieces on sale, it was finally time to paint! My husband began by touching up the crown moulding with a bright white glossy paint. Then he started applying the new color. Before you even ask…here it is.

The paint is called Ionic Sky from Home Depot.
(By the way, I have not been compensated in any way by Home Depot for this post.)

I have been collecting blue and white china for years. Here are a few of my blue and white plates displayed around the opening into the kitchen.

And one more after shot for you!

We are thrilled with the way our dining room turned out!

I hope you are inspired! Enjoy the process. Take one room at a time. Get a good plan before you start making any purchases. With a little planning and patience, updating your home doesn’t have to be expensive.
